The molecular weight of a homopolymer or copolymer of isobutylene is reduced by exposing it to high-energy ionizing radiation, preferably gamma rays, in the presence of a solvent for the polymer. The copolymer may be derived from isobutylene and isoprene, styrene, vinyl toluene, a vinyl ether, butadiene, maleic anhydride, vinyl trichlorosilane, or acrylonitrile. The solvent may be a mineral lubricating oil, naphtha, benzene, toluene or heptane. Specification 818,920 is referred to.ALSO:The molecular weight of a homopolymer or copolymer of isobutylene is reduced by exposing it to high-energy ionizing radiation, preferably gamma rays, in the presence of a solvent for the polymer.
