The invention relates to a method for starting a natural gas liquefaction unit comprising a cooling circuit that contains a refrigerant containing a hydrocarbon mixture, wherein said method consecutively comprises: (a) injecting and purging a cleaning gas in the cooling circuit; (b) injecting a first filler gas into the cooling circuit; and (c) injecting a second filler gas into the cooling circuit; wherein the average molar mass of the first filler gas is higher than the average molar mass of the second filler gas. The invention also relates to an associated method for liquefying natural gas.
