Disclosed is a catalyst precursor substance which comprises copper, zinc and aluminum and has a broad X-ray diffraction peak at a specific lattice plane spacing [d (Å)]. The catalyst precursor substance can be produced by mixing a solution containing a copper salt, a zinc salt and an aluminum salt with a solution containing a hydroxide of an alkali metal or an alkali earth metal to cause the substance to precipitate. The catalyst precursor substance may be fired to prepare a catalyst. The catalyst can be used as a catalyst for a water-gas shift reaction. The catalyst can also be used for reforming carbon monoxide. Hydrogen produced by the reforming method can be used in a fuel cell system. Thus, specifically disclosed are: a catalyst which has high activity and high durability, causes less reduction in activity when applied to a fuel cell, is useful for a water-gas shift reaction, and can be used for a long period in the water-gas shift reaction; a carbon monoxide reforming method using the catalyst; and a fuel cell system utilizing hydrogen produced by the reforming method. |
