PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tool monitoring method in an NC machine tool capable of obtaining the monitoring signal of the actual working interval without executing any setting work of a large amount of labor. SOLUTION: When executing the tool monitoring in the NC machine tool, the state of a tool 2 is monitored based on the load torque (the monitoring signal) measured during the actual working interval T2 except the actual pre-working air-cut interval T1 before executing the actual working and the post-working air-cut interval T3 after finishing the actual working out of the working interval T0 when a workpiece is worked by the tool. In this case, the timing of starting the monitoring of the tool 2 and the timing of stopping the monitoring are set based on relative position information between the tool 2 and the workpiece W.
