PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plasma display device having superior image display quality which caries out a rapid and stable writing operation and displays a smooth gradation without generating a false contour. SOLUTION: The protection layer 26 of the plasma display panel is constituted of a ground protection layer 26a, which is formed of a thin film of a metal oxide, containing at least one of magnesium oxide, strontium oxide, calcium oxide, and barium oxide, and a particle layer 26b, which is formed by adhering single-crystal particles 27 of magnesium oxide in which the ratio of the peak at 200 nm-300 nm and the peak at 300 nm-550 nm for the emission spectrum of a cathode luminescence is 2 or larger than the substrate protective layer 26a. A panel drive circuit is constructed to drive a panel, by generating an initialization discharge to form wall charges in a first subfield out of a plurality of subfields and generating a writing discharge, to eliminate the wall charges in the writing period of the plurality of subfields.
