PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stretching machine for a sheet-like article capable of improving yield in a punching step of a phase difference plate or a polarization plate, and a stretching method for the same. SOLUTION: The stretching machine includes an endless link device pair where a plurality of links for holding a thermoplastic sheet-like article are guided along a guide rail and stretch the sheet-like article while conveying from an inlet side of the guide rail to an outlet side. The respective endless link devices comprise a preheating area which keeps the width of the sheet-like article disposed at the inlet side to be substantially constant to convey it, a stretching area which is disposed at the back stream side of the preheated area and stretches the sheet-like article by gradually expanding a grasping pitch of the grasping device, and a heat fixing area which keeps the width of the sheet-like article which is disposed at the back stream side of the stretching area and stretched to be substantially constant to convey it, and at least of a plurality of units of the connected stretching area and the heat fixing area are disposed.
