PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To emit a laser beam polarized in a desired direction. SOLUTION: A surface emitting laser element 100 includes a laminated element formed by laminating a plurality of semiconductor layers including an active layer 4 and a P electrode 8 formed on the active layer 4 to emit the laser beam perpendicular to the active layer 4. At least part of the P electrode 8 is formed to have a thickness different from that of other part of the P electrode 8 to partially induce a strain in the active layer 4, thereby emitting the laser beam polarized in the desired direction.
