<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speed up the quality test of the magnetic body patterning and stabilize the servo operation when a magnetic recording medium is loaded in a magnetic recorder. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When testing the performance of a magnetic recording medium which records signals based on the magnetizing direction of the magnetic body, the magnetic recording medium tester obtains the reproduced preamble signal of the servo signal, analyzes the frequency characteristics of the obtained reproduced signal, and estimates the pattern of the magnetic recording medium based on the frequency characteristics, then decides the quality of the magnetic recording medium from the estimated pattern.
