Ethylene is polymerized with a Ziegler-type catalyst as disclosed in Specification 799,823 and in the presence of a boiling inert solvent, e.g. pentane, hexane, heptane, xylene or propane. Temperature control may be effected by the withdrawal of solvent vapour and by the addition or return of condensed solvent. The process of the invention, which may be batchwise or continuous, minimizes skin formation in the reaction zone. In examples the various reaction ingredients are added during the polymerization, subsequent to which catalyst may be destroyed with methanol. Specifications 815,161 and 826,561 also are referred to.
