Apparatus 103 are provided for facilitating the referral of a patient from a referring hospital 101 to a receiving hospital 102. The apparatus is located and administered at the receiving hospital and is connected to an inter-hospital network. Data folders are provided for each patient to be referred along with sub-folders (fig.2 212, 214, 216) for differing data representations. Uploaded data is received from referring hospitals and the received data is displayed as a graphical representation (fig.16, 1605) to a clinician. The apparatus facilitates the transmission of an acceptance message (1612) or a rejection message (fig.16, 1613) from the clinician back to the referring hospital. At the referring hospital patient data is received from a plurality of sources 107, 108, 109 to provide data representations (fig.2, 207, 208, 209) in local data formats. The received data is reformatted into a generic graphical format (fig.2 211, 212, 215) such as PDF, GIF, JPEG etc. while retaining an indication of its representation (heart trace, x-ray, bloods etc) to provide generic representations. The generic representations are uploaded to respective representation sub-folders (fig.16 1606, 1607, 1608, 1609, 1610). Data transfer can be protected by a one-time password system.
