<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a step type printing apparatus which forms, with high positional accuracy, a printing pattern where image patterns are repeatedly arranged, by using a printing method for continuously forming high precision patterns on a glass substrate or a flexible plastic film substrate and to provide a step type printing method. <P>SOLUTION: The printing pattern where the image patterns are repeatedly arranged is divided to unit printing patterns. At each printing position, a film blanket 31 and a base material to be printed 33 are closely arranged to face each other by stepwise moving positions of the film blanket and the base material to be printed relatively in an X-Y direction and then an exfoliation pattern 32 formed on the film blanket is inversely printed on the base material to be printed to form the unit printing pattern.
