Disclosed are (1) a method for manufacturing a water soluble polyuronate having good biodegradability, comprising a step for oxidizing a powdered cellulose having low crystallinity and a crystallization degree of 30% or less, (2) a polymeric builder having good biodegradability and excellent cleaning performance for mud and dirt made from a polyuronate having a weight average molecular weight of 6,000-180,000, and obtained by subjecting a polysaccharide to oxidation and (3) a detergent composition comprising said polymeric builder.
