PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method etc. for a piston for an internal combustion engine, preventing wear of an annular groove due to interference of a retaining ring for preventing coming-off of a piston pin with the annular groove for holding the retaining ring. SOLUTION: The piston 1 for the internal combustion engine is provided with: a piston pin hole 4 to which the piston pin 10 is inserted; and an annular groove 11 formed on the outer side in the piston radial direction of the piston pin hole 4 to form a notch and fitted with the retaining ring 9 for regulating axial movement of the piston pin 10. Since anodizing is applied to the annular groove 11 and the entire inner face of the annular groove 11 is protected by anodic oxide coating 12, wear of the annular groove 11 caused by friction with the retaining ring 9 is suppressed.
