PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical system that can satisfactorily correct various aberrations including chromatic aberrations, that is small in size over the entire system and that has satisfactory optical performance. SOLUTION: The optical system is comprised of a front group, a diaphragm, and a rear group, sequentially from an object side to an image side. The front group has a solid-state material element consisting of a solid-state material and having a refractive effect. The rear group has diffactive optics. The solid-state material is formed on at least one transparent surface of the dioptric element. The Abbe number to the d line of the solid-state material, the partial dispersion ratiosνd,θgF to the g line and F line, the thicknesses dnom, dgls of the solid-state material and the dioptric element, diffactive optical section of the diffactive optics and the focal lengths fdoe, fnon in the air of the diffactive optical section, and the solid-state material element are each appropriately set, the balance of the conditions of the material characteristics of the solid-state material section, and the diffactive optics is adequately set.
