PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element having columnar spacers and using a ferroelectric liquid crystal, wherein orientation disturbance is less likely to occur, and to provide a method of manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element includes a spacer-side substrate, a counter substrate and a liquid crystal layer. The spacer-side substrate has: a first base material; a first electrode layer and a plurality of the columnar spacers, both being formed on the first electrode layer; and a first alignment layer formed on the first electrode layer and columnar spacer. The counter electrode has: a second base material; a second electrode layer formed on the second base material; and a second alignment layer formed on the second electrode layer. The liquid crystal layer is sandwiched between the spacer-side substrate and the counter electrode. When straight lines are drawn by connecting any columnar spacers to each other within an area extending in an alignment process direction of the first alignment layer and having ≥1 mm in width, no regularity area where three or more parallel straight line exist adjacent to one another exists within a display region.
