PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a multifunctional alcohol fatty acid ester with a suppressed increase in bitterness with time, and having good hue, and a low acid value. SOLUTION: The multifunctional alcohol fatty acid ester is produced by reacting an ester (component A) of a 10-22C fatty acid with a 1-3C monohydric alcohol with a 4-6C alditol or an intramolecular condensate thereof (component B). The method has a step (1) of mixing the component B having≤50 ppm aldehyde content as a 50-90 wt.% aqueous solution with the component A, a step (2) of dehydrating water in the system in which the component A and the component B are charged to≤1.0%, a step (3) of adding a basic catalyst in an amount of 0.1-1.0 wt.% based on the total weight of the component A and the component B as a 1-30 wt.% solution in the 1-3C monohydric alcohol at 50-90°C, and a step (4) of completing the reaction at 140-190°C temperature under a nitrogen gas stream at 1-20 kPa.
