PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing method and a device with which increment of a system load and reduction of processing speed can be avoided in handling of index data, and which can quickly cope with recovery of the index data. SOLUTION: During recording, the index data of the prescribed frame numbers are collectively written in an HDD 4, the number of times of occurrence of seek operations in the HDD 4 are decreased, and speed reduction when frame data are written in the HDD 4 is avoided. During reproducing, the index data of the prescribed frame numbers are collectively read from the HDD and an effect similar to the time of recording is obtained. Also in recovery of the index data, when system trouble is caused, since index data up to the occurrence of the trouble are written in an index data file 22 in the HDD 4, quick recovery can be performed by recovering only index data on and after occurrence of system trouble.
