PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spindle motor which is improved in the shape of a shield member so as to lower a head and a carriage, and is reduced in size and thickness, and also to provide a disk drive unit. SOLUTION: A step 26b is formed in the radial direction of the shield member 26, and a first plane surface part 261 inside the radial direction and a second plane surface part 262 outside the radial direction, are formed. The step formed in the radial direction of the shield member 26 thereby corresponds to a step between the head 6 and the carriage 7, and the carriage 7 is accommodated in a space formed of: the surface outside the radial direction of the first plane surface part 261 of the shield member 26; the surface at the other side in the axial direction of the second plane surface part 262; and a surface at one side in the axial direction of a disk 4. The layer thickness of a winding layer 24 of a stator 22 is made uneven in the radial direction so as to correspond to the step in the radial direction of the shield member 26.
