PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information reproducer/recorder which quickly discriminates an HDDVD and a DVD, and to provide a method of discriminating an optical disk. SOLUTION: When discriminating whether a disk is the HDDVD or the DVD, a laser beam for the HDDVD or the DVD is radiated to the disk from an optical pickup, light returned from the disk is detected by an optical detector to obtain a tracking error signal, then points of features are extracted from the tracking error signal, and the disk is discriminated based on the points of the features.
