The device has a support (33) that is pivoted in a locking position to lock the device and removed from the device in an unlocking position. The support guides a slide (39), and spring units apply force to the slide. A locking jaw (41) and the slide are formed in a manner such that the slide is displaced from the unlocking position to the locking position by the spring units, and pivots the jaw automatically in the locking position when the device is set on a longitudinal bar (13). An independent claim is also included for a transversal bar for being fixed in a detachable manner to a longitudinal bar of a roof basket carrier of a motor vehicle e.g. car, and/or pick-up truck.
