PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear solenoid capable of increasing movement amount (drive distance) of a shaft by a plunger. SOLUTION: The plunger 32 is constituted by a combination of an outer plunger 41 and an inner plunger 42, and energizing force A to energize the outer plunger 41 rearward is set lager than energizing force B to energize the inner plunger 42 rearward. When magnetic attraction force is generated in a magnetic attraction gap L1 and a magnetic attraction gap L2 caused by magnetic force generated in a coil 31, due to a relationship of A>B, first the inner plunger 42 is magnetically attracted forwardly and then the outer plunger 41 is magnetically attracted forwardly. Thus, the moving distance of the shaft 6 is increased so as to enable increase in maximum lift amounts La, Lb of a ball valve 4 and a breed valve 5. Therefore, this can increase an oil passage area, improve raising/lowering speed of hydraulic pressure of an output port 22, and improve responsiveness of an automatic transmission.
