Provided is a method of inhibiting overgrowth by a plurality of proliferating cells on an implantable composition, which comprises the step of maintaining the cells within the implantable composition wherein the implantable composition comprises an alginate matrix that comprises alginate polymers and strontium. Further provided are methods for using the implantable composition in non-human animals and for the manufacture of a medical device.
