Method and arrangement for load limiting of a safety belt

The invention relates to a method and a system (101) for controlling an adaptive belt force limiter (104) for a vehicle safety belt in a vehicle provided with one or several closing velocity sensor(s) (CVS) (102) for detecting objects in front of the vehicle. The CVS (102) are capable of sensing the presence of an object in at least two different spatial areas and generating area specific signals. The signals are transmitted to a restraints control module (RCM) (103) which uses the sensor signals in order to generate a control signal for the Adaptive Belt Load Limiter (ABLL) (104). The control signal generated depends on the spatial area wherefrom the sensor signals originate. The invention further relates to the use of a CVS (102) capable of sensing the presence of an object in at least two different spatial areas and being able to distinguish the sensed signals from each other in order to control the ABLL.
