The machine has a tie pick-up device (1) having tie skids (15) for permanent immersion in a ballast bed and for supporting ties to be lifted. A tie sliding track adjoining and lengthening the skids supports the underside of the ties. An endless transporting chain (12) transports the ties from the skids to a receiving end of a tie transport unit. The chain has engaging units and deflection ends defining a reference line.
