The present invention relates to a method for determining the quantity and/or the composition of an additive and its recipe to the encountered soil and ground water condition of an "Earth Pressure Balanced Machines" (EPBM) characterized in that it comprises at least the following steps of : - taking at least one sample of the encountered soil, - mixing the sample with water and/ or with at least one additive to obtain a paste, - measuring at least one rheological property of said paste, and - comparing the measured value with predetermined reference values prestored in a database. In another embodiment, the invention relates to a device for determining the quantity and/or the composition of an additive and its recipe to the encountered soil and ground water condition of an "Earth Pressure Balanced Machines" (EPBM) characterized in that it comprises at least one chamber called reactor including means to introduce a sample of encountered soil into said reactor, means to introduce water and/or at least one additive into reactor, means for mixing to obtain a paste, and means to measure at least one rheological property of said paste.
