摘要 857,368. Fuel cells. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO. April 24, 1959 [April 28, 1958], No. 14135/59. Class 53 A fuel cell comprises an oxygen electrode 12 and a hydrogen electrode 14 to which the gases are led from containers 22, 16 through differential flow controls 26, 20. Electrolyte is supplied from a tank 30 through a line 32 and is circulated through the cell. In order to regulate the gas pressures and to maintain a constant pressure difference across each electrode, a control gas for example nitrogen is stored in a container 34 and has access to the tank 30 through a line 36. The electrolyte is thus supplied to the cell under the pressure of the gas in the container 34, for example 600 pounds per square inch. The control gas is also supplied through lines 38, 40 to the controllers 26, 20 one of which is shown in Fig. 3. The control gas is led into the device at 68 and depresses a diaphragm 62 which opens a valve 58 to allow hydrogen or oxygen to enter at 54 and pass out at 56. If the pressure of gas below the diaphragm exceeds the pressure of the control gas by an amount determined by the spring 64, for example 3 pounds per square inch, the valve 58 closes. Both controllers 26, 20 act in the same way so that both gases delivered to the cell through the lines 21, 28 are at a pressure of 3 p.s.i. above the pressure at which the electrolyte is delivered. In a modification only one differential flow control is used, the second control being replaced by a pressure equalizer which ensures that the hydrogen and oxygen are delivered to the cell at the same pressure. The equaliser is similar to the device shown in Fig. 3, but the spring 64 is omitted and the oxygen line is connected to the inlet 68, hydrogen being admitted at 54 and delivered to the cell through the outlet 56.
