PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make energy saving amount in an energy saving mode most appropriate and to reduce down time when recovering from the energy saving mode by taking into consideration a state of temperature in a fixing unit. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 includes: a first timing part for timing the period between printing jobs, a second timing part timing passage of time from power-on, a first thermometer 72 for measuring the temperature in the fixing unit 71, and a control part 10 for controlling a normal mode and the energy saving mode. The control part 10 is composed so that; an average passage of time is calculated on the basis of a plurality of timing results in the first timing part, environmental temperature is calculated surrounding the fixing unit 71 on the basis of a timing result in the second timing part and the measured result in the first thermometer 72, a normal mode maintaining time from the normal mode up to transition to the energy saving mode and the energy saving mode maintaining time from the energy saving mode up to start of recovery to the normal mode are calculated on the basis of the average passage of time and the environmental temperature.
