A wire grid type polarization element, a manufacturing method thereof, a liquid crystal device, and a projection type display apparatus are provided to display color images with high quality by enhancing both of contrast and transmittance and obtaining a high transmittance with respect to one of red, blue, and green colored rays. A metal grid(20) is formed on a substrate surface of a wire grid type polarization element(1). A plurality of columns of groove-shaped concave parts(11) are formed along the metal grid. The metal grid is buried into the groove-shaped concave parts.
