PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress an increasing load in a face detecting process while increasing the number of faces that are photographed appropriately among the faces included in a subject. SOLUTION: The imaging device is characterized by comprising: a detecting means for detecting a face in an image, an imaging means which picks up an optical image of a subject according to a photographing condition to generate image data; a first detection control means which controls the detecting means so as to detect a face in a predetermined image region which is narrower than the entire region of a photographing image which the image data represents; a second detection control means which controls the detecting means so as to detect a face in an image region other than the predetermined image region; and a setting means which sets the photographing condition based on the face detected by the detecting means under control of the first detection control means and the face detected by the detecting means under control of the second detection control means.
