PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an obstacle detector capable of properly detecting an obstacle whenever it is at a near distance or a far distance. SOLUTION: An ultrasonic sensor included in the obstacle detector can change a wave transmission frequency and wave transmission power in response to an instruction from an ECU, and can thereby switch an obstacle detection area by changing a far distance mode with high directivity and a long detection distance and a near distance mode with low directivity and a short detection distance. When changing the detection area, when a vehicle velocity V is not more than a prescribed threshold V2 (S420: NO), for example, it is set at the near distance mode (S425). Thus, the dead zone near the vehicle is thereby reduced. Meanwhile, when the vehicle velocity V is more than the prescribed threshold V2 (S420: YES), for example, it is set at the far distance mode.
