Hypochlorite removal from aq. alkaline streams - by decomposition with hydrogen peroxide, opt. added in stoichiometric excess

Thorough removal of hypochlorite ions from aq. streams is achieved by adding >=1 mole H2O2 for each mole OCl- present, at pH>8.5. Reaction is quantitative, quick independent of hypochlorite concn., without by-prod. formation and any excess H2O2 decomposes gradually. Heat of H2O2/OCl- reaction is low and the process is unaffected by presence of other chemicals, e.g. caustic alkali, Cl2, carbonates, heavy metal ions, chlorohydrocarbons, dissolved salts.
