PURPOSE:To extract Mo selectively and to separate Mo from V by reducing V(V) contained in a soln. contg. Mo(VI) and V(V) selectively to V(IV) by acidifying the soln. and adding a reducing agent to the soln., then extracting Mo alone with a basic extracting agent. CONSTITUTION:The pH of a soln. contg. Mo(IV) and V(V) such as decoction obtd. by roasting waste catalyst for the direct desulphurization of petroleum with soda, is adjusted to acidic pH (e.g. 1.25) with or without adding mineral acid (e.g. H2SO4), and V(V) in the soln. is reduced to hardly extractable V(IV) selectively by adding a reducing agent such as gaseous SO2 or its deriv. (e.g. sodium sulphite). Then, the soln. is extracted with a basic extracting agent such as R4N type, weakly acidic R3N type, or R2NH type extracting agent to extract Mo(VI) selectively, thus, Mo is separated from V.
