PURPOSE:In oxidizing tetramethylbenzene in a gaseous phase catalytically, to carry out the reaction in high activity and to obtain the titled high-purity compound in high yield, by using a catalyst of vanadium oxide and manganese oxide supported on an inert carrier. CONSTITUTION:First, vanadium oxide and manganese oxide as a catalytic substance are supported on an inert carrier (preferably alpha-alumina having <=1m<2>/g surface area, etc.) to give a catalyst. Then, 1,2,4,5-tetramethylbenzene is catalytically oxidized with a molecular oxygen-containing gas (e.g. air, etc.) in the presence of the catalyst to give the aimed compound. In the oxide, an atomic ratio of Mn to V is preferably 0.1/10-1.5/10. The catalyst, to be concrete, for example, is obtained by supporting an aqueous solution containing V2O5 and manganese carbonate on the carrier by coating method, etc., and calcining the coated carrier under air circulation. |
