PURPOSE:To obtain a lightweight elastic graphite material having excellent elasticity, by bringing a carbonaceous material treated with nitric acid or a mixed acid into contact with a basic aqueous solution to solubilize the carbonaceous material, adding an aqueous solution of an acid to the carbonaceous material to precipitate the carbonaceous material and graphitizing. CONSTITUTION:A carbonaceous material such as carbonaceous mesophase and/or coke having >=2wt.% hydrogen content obtained by heat-treating pitch is treated with nitric acid or a mixed acid of sulfuric acid and nitric acid in a volume ratio of 70/30-0/100 at 0-150 deg.C for 5min-5hr, the carbonaceous material treated with the acid is brought into contact with a basic aqueous solution to give a given pH and solubilized. Then the solubilized material is incorporated with an aqueous solution of an acid such as hydrochloric acid into pH <=3 and the carbonaceous material is precipitated to give an aquamesophase, which is filtered, dried, heat-treated at 250-300 deg.C to increase volume by several-tens times and graphitized at >=2,400 deg.C to give an elastic graphitized material having <=0.5g/cm<3> packing density and >=80% recovery ratio at 95% compression ratio. |
