Polyolefines of alpha structure are produced by polymerizing a bi-secondary olefine of formula <FORM:1027758/C3/1> in which R1 is a straight chain or branched alkyl group which may be substituted for example by halogen atoms or aryl radicals, and R2 is a straight chain alkyl group preferably containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, using as catalyst a mixture of a compound of a Group VI or VIII metal (Mendel</>aeef) and an anionic co-ordination catalyst containing at least one compound of a Group IVa or Va transition metal and at least one activator which is a metal, a metal hydride or an organometallic compound of a metal from Group Ia, II, IIIb and IVb. The preferred compound of a Group IVa or Va transition metal is a titanium halide and the preferred activator is a monohalo-dihydrocarbyl aluminium compound. The preferred Group VIII metal compound is a nickel halide and the preferred Group VI metal compound is a chromium halide. However, complexes and co-ordination compounds of the Group VIII metals may be used. A Lewis base, preferably a tertiary amine, a heterocyclic nitrogeneous base or a quaternary ammonium compound, may be added to the catalyst. Other Lewis bases mentioned are mercaptans, phosphoramides, phosphines, arsines, stibines, ethers and phosphorous and phosphoric esteramides. The bi-secondary olefines may be homo-polymerized or copolymerized with each other or ethylene. |
