The present invention relates to a method for the identification and the relative quantification of cellular proteins in complex mixtures by tandem mass spectrometry using isobaric "stable isotope labelling by amino acids in cell culture" (SILAC) with immonium ion splitting. Another object of the invention relates to a kit for performing the same, as well as a method for analyzing cellular proteins and a method for the metabolic labelling of cellular proteins.
