PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a forward/reverse shifting mechanism whose drag torque can be reduced as compared with a wet type multiple-disc clutch of the same capacity, thereby decreasing its power loss, improving its mileage. SOLUTION: There is provided the forward/reverse shifting mechanism equipped with inputting, fixing and outputting elements which enable relatively-free rotation and are provided coaxially with one another, a planetary mechanism which outputs, from the outputting element via the inputting, fixing and outputting elements, internal-combustion engine's rotary driving force transmitted to the input element as a rotary driving force of the same rotary direction as or the reverse direction to that of the inputting element, and a braking means which enables the fixing element of the planetary mechanism to be fixed, and then is employed for a vehicle automatic transmission. In the forward/reverse shifting mechanism, the braking means comprises a rotary drum equipped with an outer circumference formed integrally with the fixing element and a brake band which can wind around the outer circumference of the rotary drum.
