A hydrostatic variable-speed transmission and differential comprises a pump P having a variable inclination swash-plate 4 and supplying motors M1, M2 having swash-plates 104, 204 which are displaceable to alternative positions giving forward and reverse drive. The pump cylinder barrel is fast with an input shaft 14 which passes freely through an aperture in the swash-plate 4, and the motor cylinder barrels 127, 227 are fast with output shafts 114, 214 passing freely through the respective swashplates and disposed at right angles to the input shaft 14. A valve plate 23 for the pump is mounted on an eccentric projection 22 of a supply manifold 16 fast with stationary housing 17 for the unit. Ports 25 concentrically disposed about the projection 22 register with the pump cylinders on the intake strokes of their pistons 26, and the cylinders on the discharge strokes of the pistons register with a crescent shaped space 29 formed between the periphery of the plate 23 and an annular member 28 carried by the pump cylinder barrel. Liquid from the space 29 is discharged through passages in the member 28 and through passages 32 and 132, 232 in the housing to passages in members 128, 228 fast with the motor cylinder barrels and thence through the spaces 129, 229 between the members 128, 228 and motor valve plates 123, 223 to the motor cylinders on the working strokes of their pistons. On the discharge strokes of the motor pistons, liquid is discharged through ports in the valve plates 123, 223 to a bore 15 communicating with a bore 21 communicating with the suction side of the pump. A make-up pump p supplies liquid through a port 18 to the suction passage 21. The pressure side of the transmission is open through a port 36 to a valve assembly 39 whence it can be supplied to servomotors controlling the motor swashplates to determine forward and reverse drive and to a servomotor controlling the inclination of the pump swash-plate to determine the transmission ratio. The means for controlling the pump and motor swash-plates is described in Specification 1,021,873, and the pump and motor details are also disclosed in this Specification. |
