An electrolyte membrane comprising a graft polymer having a sulfonate group as a proton conductive group, wherein when the membrane is divided in the direction of thickness into quarters, the content of sulfonate group in individual external quarters is greater than the content of sulfonate group in individual internal quarters, and wherein the maximum values of sulfonate group distribution amounts in two external quarters are referred to as A1 and A2 and the averages of maximum values and minimum values of sulfonate group distribution amounts in two internal quarters are referred to as B1 and B2, respectively,these A1, A2, B1 and B2 satisfy the formula 1.5=(A1+A2)/(B1+B2)=8, and wherein the membrane has an ion exchange capacity of 0.5 to 2 meq/g. |
