PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method for the selective (amm)oxidation of low-molecular-weight alkanes and alkenes.

SOLUTION: The process is an improved method for producing unsaturated carboxylic acids and unsaturated nitriles from their corresponding 3-5C alkanes or a mixture of 3-5C alkanes and alkenes and comprises oxidation in the presence of a supported Mo-V-based mixed metal oxide catalyst in a multistage reaction system utilizing both separation of an oxidation product from at least one intermediate effluent stream and feed of additional oxygen into reaction zones subsequent to the first reaction zone.
