PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure discharge lamp lighting device of which the lifetime is improved by suppressing flickering, and to provide a lighting method of the high pressure discharge lamp. SOLUTION: A first aspect of the present invention is a lighting method of the high pressure discharge lamp in the high pressure discharge lamp lighting device composed of a power supply means in order to supply an AC current to the high pressure discharge lamp, and a control means for controlling operation of the power supply means. The control means consists of a step of applying a refreshing lighting mode which is a lighting mode in order to melt a projection grown more than required at the electrode tip of the high pressure discharge lamp or the projection precipitated except the projectionfor a predetermined period of time after lighting the lamp, and a step of applying a normal lighting mode which is the lighting mode in which the projection is easy to be grown or maintained at the electrode tip of the high pressure discharge lamp after passage of a predetermined time.
