A record/playback apparatus and a control method thereof are provided to inform the user of the loading time of a recording medium by displaying the loading time and of a medium error by not displaying the loading time when a defective recording medium is inserted. A record/playback apparatus(100) comprises a read unit(110) which reads out the recorded data when a recording medium is inserted, a storage unit(120) in which loading estimating equation according media type is stored, an estimation unit(140) which calculates the loading time of a recording medium, and an output unit(150) which outputs the calculated loading time to a display unit.
