PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct backlight capable of suppressing flexure even when a thin optical member is used. SOLUTION: The direct backlight includes: a front frame 1a having an opening 1a11; a back frame 1b with a bottomed opening capable of connecting to the front frame 1a; a fluorescent lamp 3 disposed inside the back frame; and a diffusion plate 5 disposed in the opening of the back frame 1b. An emission surface is disposed substantially vertical to the ground. The diffusion plate 5 is≤0.8 mm thick with a flexure 52 formed thereon, and the flexure 52 is fixed as held by the side 1a2 of the front frame 1a and the outer side 1b4 of the back frame 1b.
