PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To supply a camera with conversion lens mode by which the maximum zoom control range without causing any vignetting or image quality deterioration is obtained by an optical zooming and an electronic zooming when a front conversion lens is attached. SOLUTION: When a number-of-pixel conversion mode for performing recording with the number of pixels smaller than the number of pixels of an image pickup device is set when the front conversion lens is attached, an optical zoom means for making the optical zoom from a tele edge to a predetermined zoom position in the middle of the zoom range possible is restricted at a state that the number of segmented pixels of the image pickup device is made equal to the number of recorded pixels of the number of pixel conversion mode. When the zoom to the wide side is further requested at the predetermined zoom position, an electronic zoom means for varying the number of segmented pixels of the image pickup device is used to continue the zoom until the number of segmented pixels of the image pickup device reaches the number of effective pixels of the image pickup device.
