The invention relates to a method of determining the number of objects of a given time present in a given surface region using an infrared camera 3, comprising the following steps: a) acquisition of an image using an infrared camera 3; b) subdivision of the target region 1 into a plurality of grid units 6; c) calculation for each grid unit 6 of its average temperature TM; d) comparison, for each grid unit 6, of this average temperature TM with a prechosen reference temperature TS; e) determination, for each grid unit 6, of the difference between the temperatures TM and TS; f) determination of the number N of what are called "relevant" grid units having a difference between the temperatures TM and TS of greater than a reference value chosen beforehand according to the type of object; and g) multiplication of the number N by a predetermined coefficient, which expresses the average density of objects of a given type in a relevant grid unit, so as to obtain the number of objects of a given type present in the target region 1. |
