PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a maintenance and restoration method which can prevent color mixture without increasing the quantity of ink useless for the user and without requiring any extra component, and to provide a maintenance and restoration mechanism and an image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: The maintenance and restoration method comprises a first step for covering the nozzle surface of a liquid droplet ejection head with a cap and operating a suction means connected with the cap to perform suction from the nozzle through the cap, a second step for separating the cap from the nozzle surface, a third step for moving the meniscus position in the nozzle to the outside of the nozzle without ejecting a liquid droplet by supplying a predetermined drive signal generated from a drive signal generation means to the liquid droplet ejection head, a third step for cleaning the periphery of the nozzle by a cleaning means, and a fourth step for operating the suction means to suck the ink in the cap.
