The present invention relates to methods, systems, and compositions for treating or ameliorating the effects of a non-congenital hypertonia. In particular, a method is provided for treating or ameliorating the effects of a non-congenital hypertonia in a patient. This method includes administering to a patient an effective amount of a non-sedative, long-acting 1,5-benzodiazepine or precursors, analogs, enantiomers, optical isomers, diastereomers, N-oxides, crystalline forms, hydrates, metabolites or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.
