PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the method for cleaning a thermal head using a platen roller suitable for adopting in a small roll paper printer wherein a long recording paper let out from the roll sheet is set pulled out through the clearance between the thermal head and a platen roller. SOLUTION: When the rear end of the long recording paper 8a pulled out of a web 8 along the conveyance path which goes through a printing position 6 between the thermal head 2 and the platen roller 4 pressed thereto has passed the printing position 6, a thermal printer 1 drives a feed motor 9 at a drive speed later than the time of conveying the recording paper and revolves the platen roller 4 one by one round in the forward and backward directions in the state of pressing the platen roller to the surface part 3a of the thermal head 2 directly, and then foreign substance adhered to the surface part 3a of the thermal head 2 is scoured off by the platen roller 4.
