<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound transitable to a smectic phase and thus useful for preparing an optical material. <P>SOLUTION: The compound is represented by the formula: Q<SP>1</SP>-SP<SP>1</SP>-X<SP>1</SP>-A<SP>1</SP>-B<SP>1</SP>-C<SP>1</SP>-D<SP>1</SP>-Y<SP>1</SP>-L-Y<SP>2</SP>-D<SP>2</SP>-C<SP>2</SP>-B<SP>2</SP>-A<SP>2</SP>-X<SP>2</SP>-SP<SP>2</SP>-Q<SP>2</SP>(wherein Q<SP>1</SP>and Q<SP>2</SP>are each a polymerizable group; SP<SP>1</SP>and SP<SP>2</SP>are each a spacer group; X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP>, Y<SP>1</SP>and Y<SP>2</SP>are each a linking group; L is a spacer group having a liner structure containing four or more atoms; A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>, B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP>, C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP>, D<SP>1</SP>and D<SP>2</SP>are each a bivalent group selected from among formulae IIa, IIb and IIc (wherein R<SP>a</SP>, R<SP>b</SP>and R<SP>c</SP>are each a substituent group; na, nb and nc are each an integer of 0-4; and when na, nb and nc are each an integer of 2 or more, R<SP>a</SP>'s, R<SP>b</SP>'s and R<SP>c</SP>'s are each the same or different); and provided that at least two of A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>1</SP>and D<SP>1</SP>are each a bivalent group of formula IIa or a bivalent group of formula IIb and at least two of A<SP>2</SP>, B<SP>2</SP>, C<SP>2</SP>and D<SP>2</SP>are each a bivalent group of formula IIa or a bivalent group of formula IIb). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
