Disclosed is a winder (20) having a drum (22) about which a web passes in use, a meshed sector traversing, reciprocable cutter (24) which severs the web (78) as it passes around the drum (22) into segments, a suction facility (38) which draws air through a suction portion of the drum such that when severed, the trailing web segment is carried by the suction portion to a release position, a core loader (28) which, for each segment receives a core (80) at a starting position whereat the core (80) is rotated by contact with said drum (22) and whereat the core (80) receives the leading edge of said trailing segment, without fold-over, from said drum (22) when the trailing segment reaches the take-up position, a guide (30) which receives the core after the segment has started to wind thereupon, and a transfer mechanism (32) which receives the core (80) from the guide (30) and supports same in driven contact with the drum (22) as the segment is wound thereon The drum (22) may be reversible with associated reversibility for the cutter means (24).
